"Hunzas" - the Longest Lived People (Video)

In the early 70s, National Geographic ran an extensive series of articles investigating claims of long-lived people around the world. The Hunza (pronounced hoonza”) People, who live in the North of Pakistan, were one of those peoples. It is believed that among these people centenarians are a common occurrence. The Hunza and the valley in which they live was famous in the region. The Hunza Valley is a high altitude, fertile valley that supports agriculture and provides isolation from the rest of the world. Some say that the Hunza Valley was the basis for Shangri La in the book “Lost Horizons”.

No one really knows exactly how long they live because it has never been documented and they did not measure the quality of their lives in years. Physicians examined the Hunza and made their best guesses to how old they people were. Without focusing too much on documented maximum age, the truly extraordinary fact is that all reports from the Hunza mention that even the most elderly population is fit, full of vitality and virtually free from disease.
How did they remain disease free, you might ask?
In short, diet, exercise and proper attitude. The mountain terrain where the Hunza live is extremely rough and the Hunza people spend their lives moving among the rough passages and steep ridges. They are said to be hardier than even the famous Sherpa people of the Himalayan region.
How and what do they eat?
Hunzas eat only two meals a day and eat very little. The first meal is taken about noon, although the Hunzas are up every morning at around five a.m. This may sound surprising, since most nutrition experts here in the west stress the importance of a hearty breakfast, even though our life-style is relatively sedentary compared to that of the Hunzas; who engage in demanding physical labor all morning long on an empty stomach.
Their primary died consists of mostly plants, eaten raw. The Hunza do not have access to a large amount of fuel for cooking, nor are there many animals available for eating, so they plant what they can and gather the rest. Apricots (they have a particular fondness for apricot pits), cherries, grapes, plums and peaches are all cultivated by the Hunza. They also eat a lot of grains such as wheat, barley, and millet. During the off season (the cold winter months) milk and cheese are important sources of animal protein. Meat, although not completely eliminated, is consumed only very rarely, reserved for special occasions like marriages or festivals. This fact is no doubt one of the reasons why the Hunzas have such healthy digestive systems. Even when meat is served, the portions are very small and are generally cut into small pieces and stewed for a long time. Beef and mutton are rarely used, chicken being their most common source of animal protein. The important thing to remember is that although the Hunzas are not wholly vegetarian, meat forms a minimal part of their daily diet. In addition, all Hunza food is completely natural, containing no chemical additives whatsoever.
And their attitude, where they happy?
Absolutely. In fact, many researchers have claimed that they’re "The Happiest People on Earth". The Hunza have a certain relish and passion for life -- perhaps brought on to some extent by their daily rigorous exercise and simple lifestyle.

What Can We Learn from the Hunza?
Three things:
  1. Eat primarily raw fruits and vegetables
  2. Exercise daily
  3. Maintain a positive outlook
In the following video Fred speaks to his teacher training students and covers several subjects relating to energy and life. Mentioned in this clip are the Hunza people of the Pakistani Himalayas who are the oldest lived people in the world and Fred explains the secrets to their longevity.

Exercise and food

The reason why Vinyasa yoga is so good, this is the way I usually start with people, I usually start with people explaining that two things are required for perfect functioning of the brain, body and in other words health and peace, two things, exercise and food. Exercise has to be everyday, no exceptions and has to be perfect meaning systematic, comprehensive and vigorous, but not injurious, perfect and everyday. And then the food has to be as close to perfect as you want it to be. And as close to perfect as you can get it and still have fun in our life so to speak.
Now people who have one side of that mastered and not the other will always find a problem. People that are all into raw food look like the biggest group of weirdo’s you’ve ever seen. They don’t exercise, they don’t look healthy, the reason they’re not necessarily exercising right, and that’s the reason that they wouldn’t look healthy. If they did, they would look healthier than anybody. It’s a whole bunch of eat real and well but don’t know anything about yoga and exercise and they just eat well and good but they don’t exercise and it shows, because you can’t be healthy and not exercise. They’re the end of the spectrum or all the athletes out there who are going physical specimens but eat like shit and then they are also on the road to disaster. When they put the both of them together you have an environment of transformation, no potential that is profound, that’s what the program is.
giving it the opportunity to let your body be in this place that it loves to be which is exercising everyday and eating perfectly and resting a lot and all that stuff that it likes to do when its doing what it wants to do.

Our Brain

The brain is an organ. It functions as it is designed in very complex and minimally understood ways. One thing is fairly clear is that as humans we don’t really understand the powerful and immensely complex activities which the brain is responsible for and does. The brain is a power center and chemical production center and a analysis center and a perceptual center and is involved in myriad aspects of keeping the body in balance and in good health. And yet the most important way to look at the brain in the context of health is as an organ. Just another organ that has a divine blueprint from which it does the jobs that it is assigned as best it can with the resources it has. And so as any other organ has the right to do, the brain can also either be functioning well or not functioning well. It can either be in health and balance or not. And just like any other organ, it is not a matter of coincidence that the brain is not functioning optimally. The quality of the blood determines the quality of the organism and thus the health of the brain and thus the quality of thought. It is virually impossible to keep a organ as highly refined and specific as the human brain in high octane proper working condition in a poisoned and drugged circulation system. All depressions, stemming from a lack of appreciation, a lack of gratitude, lack of understanding about the nature of Life and God, is a first symptom of a debilitated system. The well honed and primed human brain is a sensitive and radiantly powerful organ/aspect of our bodies and is a perceiver of spiritual truth inherently. We are spiritual beings living a human experience, but so long as we eat as humans were intended to eat, we continue in our spiritual beingness and if we digress we come to experience the uniquely human experiences of degenerative disease in its various expressions.

Blood flow and Flow in General

In analogies that describe health, almost all are directing the student to a visualization of energetic flow of some sort. There are many ways which energy flow can be expressed on the planet. The most common and easiest to visualize is the water down a stream visual. If the stream is blocked or damned, it will stagnate. The flow of air is the same and in fact all energy flow behaves exactly the same way and this is crucial to consider as if for the first time. Health is the free flow of energy in the body. Disease processes always first begin with stagnation.

Many words have just been used to describe a way of visualizing the energetic flow. But we must for at least a moment try to move beyond words to a space free of thought forms. Once there visualize and equate all the different ways energy flows in relationship on the planet. It is always the same characteristic. Health comes in any relationship where the energy freely flows. You can verify for yourself. Once you can see the oneness of all energetic behavior you can consider the nature of stagnation on energetic systems. Stagnation is the result of blocks in the energetic system. Stagnation leads to disease.

The arteries leave your heart and travel away into the vessels of your bodies and then become the capillaries which are only one cell wide and then the capillaries turn into the veins which return the blood to the lungs and heart, and all this is a closed energetic system. Just like any other.

What is important to do is to consider this model of energy flow in your understandings of human health and society. People need to get moving and get their blood flowing and clear their systems of stagnation. All disease begins with stagnation probably form toxic sources of food.

And as always it all comes to blood flow. The muscles and glands and organs all are kept in a healthy state proper blood flow. Energy flow.

You are what you eat

It is impossible to over-emphasize the importance of a proper diet. You are your diet. The cliché ‘you are what you eat’ has, for the most part, lost its edge. Let me try to sharpen it again. YOU ARE MADE OUT OF WHAT YOU EAT. The food that you put into your mouth becomes you. The cells that make up the tissues in your eyes and lungs and blood are made from the food that you eat. Your body is making over a million cells a second and the material it uses is the food you eat. Think about that. Right now your body is using the food you ate this morning to create and maintain you. What did you eat for breakfast? Think of your body using something like a Pepsi or a sugary cereal to make up your blood. Think of making a weak cell.
